Over-the-Counter Drugs: Only a Quick Fix

Before popping another acetaminophen or ibuprofen for your aches and pains, explore a more holistic approach by visiting a chiropractor. This could be the game-changer you need for lasting relief.

“Over-the-counter drugs, known as OTC, do not fix chronic pain. They simply mask the problem until a later date. In the long run, they can also be harmful to individuals,” said Dr. Chris Dolecki, D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic), and a member of the Michigan Association of Chiropractors education committee. “Addressing the root cause of pain through proper chiropractic evaluation and treatment is essential for long-term health and wellness.”

What Are Over-the-Counter Drugs
Over-the-counter drugs are medications that can be purchased without a prescription from your doctor and are available at your nearest stores, such as Walmart, Meijer, or Walgreens.

Most Common Pain Medications

  • Advil
  • Tylenol
  • Excedrin
  • Motrin

Warnings Against Over-the-Counter Drug Use
Dr. Gordon Schiff of Harvard Medical School cautions that effective medication cannot be completely safe. He says the decision to sell a drug OTC is often driven by marketing rather than safety considerations. This emphasis on marketing-driven decisions can sometimes overshadow thorough assessments of a drug’s potential risks and benefits for self-administration, potentially compromising consumer safety.

Another Harvard Medical School study advises against using OTC drugs for congestion, discomfort, and fevers that contain heart-harming nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and decongestants during cold and flu season. Long-term use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen can cause heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and other cardiovascular issues.

According to the Mayo Clinic, taking too much acetaminophen, commonly known as Tylenol, is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the United States. Acetaminophen overdose can happen after taking a very large amount all at once or taking higher doses every day for a few days.

Why You Should Visit a Chiropractor Before Using Meds
Chiropractic is a safe and drug-free treatment that focuses on the body’s natural healing powers. When you see a chiropractor, they will review your medical history, examine you, and, if necessary, use testing to decide if chiropractic treatment is right for you. Chiropractors also improve the movement and function of spinal joints and nerves to alleviate discomfort and improve well-being.

One of the most common causes of taking over-the-counter drugs, such as Advil, is headaches. For headaches, chiropractic care can target underlying issues such as muscle tension and poor posture, often providing long-term relief without over-the-counter medications. By addressing the root cause of symptoms, chiropractors offer a natural and drug-free alternative to pain relief, complemented by therapeutic exercises, ergonomic modifications, and lifestyle recommendations to support spinal health and prevent future pain episodes.

Harvard Medical School states that chiropractic therapy focuses on spinal manipulation and other techniques to relieve pain, improve function, and promote self-healing, often in collaboration with other healthcare providers. Supported by research for low back pain, chiropractic care aims to enhance patients’ pain management and overall well-being.

Other Treatments Chiropractors Have To Offer
Opting for chiropractic care over medication offers a holistic health approach, addressing immediate discomfort and long-term wellness. Chiropractors excel in alleviating various issues, including back, hip, and neck pain, migraines, headaches, and pinched nerves. They also extend their expertise to aiding pregnant patients and children.

Beyond pain relief, chiropractors offer personalized guidance on nutrition and exercise tailored to individual requirements, fostering overall well-being.

Chiropractic therapies help alleviate discomfort and promote optimal physical function. A properly functioning spine enhances the communication pathways between the brain and body, fostering self-healing abilities within the body.
